PATHOLOGY & LABORATORY MEDICINE SERVICE

DUTIES INCLUDE: The incumbent serves as an Office Automation Assistant with responsibility for the reporting function of the Anatomic Pathology Section of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. Incumbent is responsible for: diagnostic SNOMED coding, CPT coding, quality assurance/quality control data collection and analysis. Prepares reports, diagnostic materials, and data that pathologists use for the Mortality conference, Pulmonary conference, Tumor Board, Surgical Case Board, and other pathology communication of diagnosis over the phone. Performs individual transcription duties. Performs typing work, whether from voice recordings or written material, using work processing software and dictation equipment.

Incumbent is responsible for: diagnostic SNOMED coding, CPT coding, quality assurance/quality control data collection and analysis. Prepares reports, diagnostic materials, and data that pathologists use for the Mortality conference, Pulmonary conference, Tumor Board, Surgical Case Board, and other pathology communication of diagnosis over the phone. Performs individual transcription duties. Performs typing work, whether from voice recordings or written material, using work processing software and dictation equipment. Transcribes and types surgical, cytological, electron microscopy and bone marrow reports. Types a variety of materials in rough draft or final form. Prepares correspondence for pathologists including coordination of action papers with office and agency staff. Receives, screens and verifies documents. Initiates work orders for maintenance of equipment. Makes copies of material, collates and provides the finished product. Maintains a variety of logs, ledgers, and other records. Performs a variety of receptionist, recordkeeping, and miscellaneous duties. Receives visitors, answers the telephone, and refers calls. Gather and compiles statistics for necessary reports.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Candidates must be citizens of the United States. One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level, OR four (4) years of education above the high school level. Specialized experience is experience performing transcription and general office duties in a medical setting. THIS POSITION REQUIRES A QUALIFIED TYPIST (40WPM). College transcripts must be submitted is using education to qualify. APPLICANTS PLEASE NOTE: Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications (particularly positions with a positive education requirement.) You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.
You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position.

1. Knowledge of word processors, dictation system(s), personal computers, hospital-wide VISTA program.
2. Knowledge of medical terminology, CPT and SNOMED coding, medical abbreviations, medications, surgical and other medical procedures.
3. Knowledge of English grammar and usage including spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and abbreviations.
4. Knowledge of general office procedures.
