Provides X-ray studies for doctors to use in diagnosis and treatment of various accident trauma and a wide variety of defects and diseases. Uses all tools, equipment, and materials common to the trade such as film markers, positioning aides, portable and stationary radiographic machines, iodinated and non-iodinated contrast material, barium liquids and powders, etc. Establishes and maintains standards, guidelines and practices. Mixes film processing solutions, loads and unloads film holders, and reproduces and/or duplicates images. Duties and responsibilities vary and may increase according to grade level.

Qualifications and Evaluations

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: 

GS-5: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level.  GS-6: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level.

GS-7: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level. 

GS-8: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level.  that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs), as identified in this announcement, to successfully perform the duties of the position.  Specialized experience may have been gained in the operation of diagnostic radiology equipment under the direction of radiologists or other medical officers to produce radiographic studies used in medical diagnosis and treatment.   OR  EDUCATION FOR GS-5 ONLY: Successful completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months' duration in a post-high school radiography program.

 

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR NSPS POSITIONS: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience at the next lower qualifying pay band or equivalent grade under the General Schedule (GS) or other pay systems. Equivalent experience may be at the level of the lowest GS grade covered by the applicable pay band; however, the experience must demonstrate your ability to apply the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position being filled.  Specialized experience may have been gained in the operation of diagnostic radiology equipment under the direction of radiologists or other medical officers to produce radiographic studies used in medical diagnosis and treatment.  

 

 

NOTE: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (l) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field.  For additional requirements refer to http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/Standards/IORs/gs0600/0647.htm.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid work on the same basis as for paid experience. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. To receive credit for such experience you must indicate clearly the nature of the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the number of hours per week spent in such employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES / JOB ELEMENTS:  

 

  • Ability to perform routine diagnostic radiological procedures following standard operating procedures.
  • Knowledge of x-ray equipment or diagnostic radiology equipment sufficient to monitor for proper operation, modify standard procedures to accommodate new equipment or examinations and determine when maintenance or repair is needed.
  • Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology to identify organs appearing on film sufficient to judge acceptability of radiographic films for diagnostic use and to determine proper positioning techniques.
  • Knowledge of radiographic exposure techniques, contrast media, darkroom chemistry and development techniques sufficient to provide optimal radiological material for interpretation.

  • Medal holders and Gulf War veterans who originally enlisted after September 7, 1980, or entered on active duty on or after October 14, 1982, without having previously completed 24 months of continuous active duty, must have served continuously for 24 months or the full period called or ordered to active duty.
  • Effective on October 1, 1980, military retirees at or above the rank of major or equivalent, are not entitled to preference unless they qualify as disabled veterans.

Ten-point preference is given to:

  • those honorably separated veterans who 1) qualify as disabled veterans because they have served on active duty in the Armed Forces at any time and have a service-connected disability or are receiving compensation, disability retirement benefits, or pension from the military or the Department of Veterans Affairs; or 2) are Purple Heart recipients;
  • the spouse of a veteran unable to work because of a service-connected disability;
  • the unmarried widow of certain deceased veterans; and the mother of a veteran who died in service or who is permanently and totally disabled.
