These positions are being filled under Medical Direct Hiring Authority for certain civilian healthcare professional positions and are located Air Force-Wide. Positions may be filled as permanent, temporary or term with a full-time or part-time work schedule. Pay will vary by geographic location.

DUTIES:

·        Perform, under the supervision and direction of a dentist, prophylactic dental treatment that includes application of topical medication and dental health education for patients within a clinical setting. 

·        Examine teeth and surrounding tissues for evidence of plaque and periodontal disease and charts findings.  Examine oral cavity and records condition. 

·        Examines patient’s mouth, throat, and pharynx and refers abnormalities such as cavities, traumatic occlusion, and suspicious lesions to the dentist. 

·        Interpret X-rays to identify tooth structures, calculus, and abnormalities such as cavities and deep periodontal pockets.  Administers local anesthesia and performs deep subgingival scaling, root planning, and subgingival curettage.   

·        Take intraoral impressions to prepare study models.  Educate patient on need for daily oral health and fluoride treatment. 

·        Develop teaching aids such as exhibits and displays to stimulate behavioral changes and to improve the level of oral health.  Instruct patients at chair side in oral hygiene, brushing, flossing techniques, and periodontal techniques.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  GS-06: One year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level.  GS-07: One year of specialized experience at the GS-06 level.  GS-08: One year of specialized experience at the GS-07 level.  GS-09: One year of specialized experience at the GS-08 level.  Specialized experience is experience which may have been gained while performing oral prophylactic care and in providing oral health educational services to patients. Additionally, at the higher grade levels, qualifying experience includes (1) performing advanced oral prophylactic, therapeutic, and preventive procedures in cases of periodontal diseases or inflammation or on patients with other medical or dental problems, (2) placing temporary fillings, and (3) finishing amalgam restorations. Applicants for positions involving the use of X-rays must have had experience in taking and interpreting X-rays.

EDUCATION:

GS-09, Community Health Dental Hygenists: Two years of progressively higher level graduate education or a Master's of equivalent degree in dental hygiene or a directly related field of study

such as radiation physics; radiation biology; radiation health, safety, and protection; X-ray films and radiographic film quality, radiographic techniques; darkroom and processing techniques; and film mounting.

 

AND

 

Licensure: Applicants for all grade levels and specializations must be currently licensed to practice as dental hygienists in a State or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia.

 

NOTE: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75.  Essentially, they must (l) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements:

 

(1) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others OR (2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence, as determined by OPM or the employing agency.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):  Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 

 

1.    Knowledge of dental hygiene science such as oral anatomy, oral physiology and histology, the principles and techniques of preventive dentistry, and dental instruments and materials.

2.    Knowledge of oral pathology and periodontology sufficient to recognize a variety of abnormal conditions such as acute gingivitis, periodontitis, and deep periodontal pockets.

3.    Knowledge of medical diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease as they relate to the care and treatment of the teeth.

4.    Skill and dexterity in manipulating a variety of instruments while performing specialized dental hygiene procedures.

5.    Ability to expose develops, and process radiographs including bite wing, periapical, and panoramic X-rays.

6.    Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  

 

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.  You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.  It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

·        Employee may be subject to random drug testing.

·        Must be licensed to practice as a dental hygienist in a state or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia.

·        May be subject to random drug testing.

·        May be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

·        Shift work and emergency overtime may be required.
