These positions are being filled under Medical Direct Hiring Authority for certain civilian healthcare professionals positions and are located Air Force-Wide. Positions may be filled as permanent, temporary or term with a full-time or part-time work schedule. Pay will vary by geographic location.

DUTIES:

 ·        Receive and prepare patients for dental treatment.

·        Prepare materials and equipment for use by the dentist.  Assist a dentist at chairside or bedside in the treatment of patients. 

·        Perform reversible intra-oral procedures under the supervision of the dentist. 

·        Perform dental radiography work; and to keep records of appointments, examinations, treatments and supplies.

·        Perform a variety of administrative duties related to dental activities. 

·        Perform general dental infection control and safety procedures. 

·        Comply with Center of Disease Control, American Dental Association, Air Force and local infection control procedures and guidelines.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  At least one year of specialized experience at the GS-04 level.   Specialized experience is experience that may have been gained while provides diagnostic and preventive services, delivers comprehensive dental treatment and assures professional oversight. 

 

NOTE: Applicants for Dental Assistant (Expanded Function) positions must have completed 1 year of acceptable course work, preceptorship, or other formal training and/or work assignments specifically designed to perform intra-oral procedures. Examples of acceptable training are: (1) courses in a dental hygiene or dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Accreditation that are directly related to the intra-oral procedures (also referred to as expanded functions) that are to be performed in the position to be filled; (2) U.S. Army's Dental Therapy Assistant Training Program; (3) continuing education courses in expanded functions for dental assistants offered by the Indian Health Service of the Department of Health and Human Services or (4) other training comparable to the above in private or governmental hospitals, clinics, or schools that included formal classroom instruction and clinical training in the knowledge and skills required to perform intra-oral procedures in the position to be filled.

 

OR

 

EDUCATION:

Successful completion of a full 4 year course of study in a dental assistant or dental hygiene program that included at least 24 semester hours in courses such as:   radiation physics; radiation biology; radiation health, safety, and protection; X-ray films and radiographic film quality, radiographic techniques; darkroom and processing techniques; and film mounting.

 

AND

 

NOTE: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75.  Essentially, they must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements:

 

(1) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others – OR - (2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence, as determined by OPM or the employing agency.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):  Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 

 

1.    Knowledge of dental science such as oral anatomy, oral physiology and histology, the principles and techniques of dental assisting, and dental instruments and materials.

2.    Knowledge of sterilization techniques sufficient to sterilize dental instruments and equipment.

3.    Knowledge of dental terminology and administrative requirements for proper record keeping procedures to maintain patient dental health records, and patient scheduling. 

4.    Skill and dexterity in manipulating a variety of instruments and equipment while performing dental assisting procedures.

5.    Skill in operating and adjusting dental radiographic equipment IAW accepted radiation safety standards and processing dental radiographs.

 

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.  You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.  It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

·        Employee may be subject to random drug testing.

·        Employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

·        Shift work and emergency overtime may be required.

·        Employees must maintain current certifications.

·        May occasionally travel away from the normal duty station and travel on military and/or commercial aircraft.
