This is an open continuous announcement, for multiple units within Nursing Services. As full-time opportunities are available applications will be reviewed and sent to the hiring manager for review.

 

A Nursing Assistant at the San Francisco Veterans Medical Center will be responsible to provide nursing care to veterans in a variety of units throughout Nursing Services.  A Nursing Assistant may be responsible to perform routine patient care for assigned patients in accordance with established policies, procedures, and guidelines with general instructions given by the RN/LVN. Uses initiative to carry out recurring assignments and in prioritizing assigned duties based on patient condition and previous instructions, obtains additional instructions for any unusual or unfamiliar situations where appropriate guidelines are not readily available. The nursing assistant may be assigned to any clinical area with the San Francisco VA Medical Center, to include ambulatory care, critical care, extended care or psychiatry, and unit specific activities may be performed.

 

Duties may include:

  • - Performing a range of diagnostic support duties, preparing patients for tests, exams and treatments.
  • - Checks and record stool guiacs.
  • - Properly prepares oxygen dependant patients for transport to procedures.
  • - Maintains client/patient privacy.
  • - Collects patient data.
  • - Assists/completes clerical and transport functions as assigned.
  • - Adheres to VA and Nursing Service policies, procedures and standards.
  • - Delivers care to patients in a respectful and non-judgmental manner.
  • - Accurately reports patient information.
  • - Complies with Medical Center standards.
  • - Utilizes equipment in a safe manner.
  • - Reports unsafe equipment and working conditions to appropriate individual.
  • - Employs proper lifting/moving, transfer, and assistive devices and demonstrates safe and proper body mechanics.
  • - Completes mandatory safety, equipment and other annual reviews.
  • - Demonstrates and maintains competency as defined by unit and department criteria.
  • - Others duties as assigned.

 

Work Schedule: Full Time- days and hours will vary by department, weekends and holidays may be required.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

  • GS-4: Must have at least six months of general experience that demonstrates an ability to learn and perform nursing care duties, to deal successfully with people, and to be adaptable to the work situation an have six months of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-03 grade level in the federal service performing non-professional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home or other medical patient care facility, or as a home health aid. Examples of non-professional nursing care work include: 1) performing personal nursing care duties; 2) support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures; 3) caring for mentally ill patients; 4) assisting surgeons or registered nurses in operating room activities.

     

    GS-5: Must have (1) one or more years of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-04 grade level in the federal service performing non-professional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical patient care facility, or as a home health aid. Examples of non-professional nursing care work include: 1) performing personal nursing care duties; 2) support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures; 3) caring for mentally ill patients; 4) assisting surgeons or registered nurses in operating room activities.

     

    English Language Proficiency: Psychologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with Title 38, United States Code (38 U.S.C.). 

Education Requirements:

Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications (particularly positions with a positive education requirement.)  Therefore, applicants must report only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.  Applicants can verify accreditation at the following website:  http://www.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/index.html  All education claimed by applicants will be verified by the appointing agency accordingly.

 

Substitution of Education for Experience:  Certain types of education may be substituted for experience.  Applicants substituting education for experience should submit a school transcript.

 

GS-4: Must have completed a two year nursing degree program from an accredited community college, junior college, college or university.

 

GS-5: Must have completed four years of education above the high school level at an accredited college or university, and have obtained a bachelor's degree in nursing or a related field (one academic year of education is 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours).
