The VA Central Western Massachusetts Health Care System is seeking energetic and innovative individuals to provide Mental Health care to our Veterans.  The ideal candidates will be detail oriented and be able to work in a team setting.  The work environment is fast paced, and the patient population is challenging.  The psychiatrist will perform general duties expected on an inpatient Mental Health unit or an outpatient Mental Health Clinic setting to include psychiatric assessment, medication management, and consultation liaison duties to Mental Health and Primary Care staff.  Duties may include Compensation and Pension examinations and will include cross-coverage and weekend, holiday and evening/night Psychiatric Officer of the Day rotations.  Psychiatrist assignments are subject to change based on organizational and patient needs.  Applications will remain on file and forwarded to selecting officials as vacancies become available for a period of 1 year from the opening date of the vacancy.  This vacancy may be used to fill part-time, full-time, and intermittent appointments.

 

The Medical Center serves over 25,000 patients at its main campus and 5 community based outpatient clinics in Central and Western Massachusetts.  Core missions are Primary Care, Mental Health Inpatient and Outpatient Care, and Extended Care.  The Medical Center is engaging employees in a "Culture of Improvement" utilizing a variety of process improvement techniques to improve efficiency of clinical operational functions to the benefit of veterans and staff.

Applicants must meet the basic requirements as stated in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G2, dated 4/15/02.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

 

     

     a.  Citizenship.  Citizen of the United States.  (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

 

     b.  Education.  Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.  The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.  Approved schools are:

 

     (1)  Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.

 

     (2)  Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

 

     (3)  Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure. 

 

Licensure:  

Licensure and Registration

 

            (1)  Physicians (Except Residents).  Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.  The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.  The facility Director may waive this licensure requirement if the physician is to serve in a country other than the United States and the physician has licensure in that country.  (NOTE:  Impaired Licensure) - A physician who has, or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions of chapter 3, section B, paragraph 14 of this part.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), 7407(d).

VETPRO CREDENTIALING: Individuals selected for positions that have patient care responsibilities are subject to undergoing an electronic credentialing process called VetPro. As part of this process, it will be necessary for you to submit complete information concerning your professional education, training, experience, licensure and certifications using VetPro. The candidate selected will be provided with further information on how to use VetPro.
