This announcement is open to all non-temporary Title 5 employees and all non-temporary Veterans Canteen Service employees of the Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC).  In addition, non-temporary Title 38 or Hybrid Title 38 employees of this medical center with interchange agreement eligibility, or who have reinstatement eligibility from a prior competitive service appointment, may apply.

This announcement will be used to fill Housekeeping Aid vacancies within the Robley Rex VA Medical Center. 

 

As a Housekeeping Aid, you will perform duties necessary for the maintenance of a level of environmental sanitation befitting a hospital.

 

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

 

·         Sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, mopping, scrubbing, waxing floors;

·         Washing and polishing furniture, doors, and metal;

·         Cleaning beds, venetian blinds, light fixtures, walls and windows;

·         Cleaning and disinfecting sanitary fixtures;

·         Emptying and cleaning trash receptacles;

·         Lifting and moving furniture;

·         Responsible for proper use and care of battery powered scrubber, electrically powered floor scrubber, baseboard scrubber, and wet/dry pick-up vacuum cleaner.

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The position requires performance of work which involves light physical effort, such as that involved in using vacuum cleaners and dry mops; continually standing, bending, stooping and reaching; frequently lifting and emptying waste baskets; frequently pushing carts loaded with waste; and lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds. Also performs work which involves moderate to heavy physical effort, such as required to move heavy equipment and furniture, e.d., heavy industrial vacuum cleaners, heavy duty floor scrubbers and buffers, couches, beds, etc., and lifting, carrying and/or moving items weighing up to 40-50 pounds.

 

NOTE:  Selectee is subject to a pre-employment physical.

 

WORK CONDITIONS:  Usually works indoors in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Candidate will be exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc., as well as subject to cuts and bruises. Continually exposed to dust, dirt and disagreeable odors, and is frequently exposed to organic material which may be contaminated and/or infectious and require special handling.   

 

WORK SCHEDULE: Positions are full-time and will include weekends and holidays. Discussion of actual shifts will take place at the time of interview and selection.

EXPERIENCE:

A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume or OF-612. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C (www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c).

 

Examples of duties include: isolation cleaning, performing aseptic cleaning techniques in a healthcare environment, properly disposing of all waste [general trash, regulated medical (infectious), chemotherapy waste, and hazardous (mercury spills) waste],moving and arranging furniture, requesting and stocking supplies; mopping, dry mopping, waxing and polishing floors using heavy powered scrubbers and buffers, vacuum cleaners/shampooers, dusting, waxing, and polishing furniture; cleaning and disinfecting restrooms;

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions.
