The Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) improves the health of our veterans by providing a continuum of care through an integrated health care delivery system.  It is a tertiary care facility classified as a level 1c facility affiliated with the University of Louisville and as such integrates teaching, research, and advanced patient care, making it an attractive academic medical center.  The facility offers a full spectrum of comprehensive health care services, using state-of-the-art technology and innovative programs, as well as education and research benefits, to Veterans residing in 40 counties in central and western Kentucky and in southern Indiana. In recognition of continued efforts to improve patient care, the medical center was awarded the Robert W. DUTIES: 

The Robley Rex Veterans Affair Medical Center (VAMC) in Louisville, Kentucky, is seeking a visionary, creative, experienced and dynamic physician leader for the full-time position of Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services (PMR).   The medical center is a major affiliate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine with fully integrated medical student, residency, and fellowship programs.  The VAMC offers a continuum of healthcare through primary, tertiary, and acute care in the areas of medicine, surgery, mental health, physical medicine and rehabilitation, dentistry, and extended care, utilizing 110 operating beds, and operating eight community based outpatient clinics.    Land has been purchased for a new state-of-the-art medical center, expected to open in early 2018.  The Chief, PMR will be involved with the design of the PMR department in the new medical center. 

The Chief will have administrative, managerial, and clinical responsibilities for the PMR Service. The applicant should have outstanding managerial and interpersonal skills.   The incumbent will be responsible for the management of over 20 staff including a Nurse Practitioner, an Exercise Physiologist and an Assistive Technology Professional.  PMR Service provides care  for acute and respite care inpatients as well as outpatients, offering physiatry, physical therapy, occupational therapy, gait analysis, electrodiagnostic studies, and rehabilitation management.   Preferred candidate would have experience in system redesign, process improvement and VA clinical performance measures.   The Chief PMR is a leadership position that is responsible for all aspects of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and reports directly to the Office of the Chief of Staff.   The incumbent has the responsibility to ensure that high quality patient care is delivered in a resource efficient manner.    Training requirements include board eligible or board certification in Physiatry.

All individuals applying under this announcement must meet the qualifications for appointment as contained in VA Handbook 5005 Part II, Appendix G2 dated April 15, 2002; be a United States Citizen (Noncitizens may apply and be appointed when no qualified citizens are available in accordance with current regulations); pass a pre-employment physical examination including the possibility of a drug screen; be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d); possess/maintain a current, full and unrestricted license to practice in the state, territory or commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.  In addition, candidates must be board-certified or board eligible.  

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION ARE AS FOLLOWS:

·         Board Certified or Board Eligible in Physiatry

·         Outstanding managerial and interpersonal skills

·         Eligibility for faculty appointment at the University of Louisville    

SELECTION CRITERIA FOR THIS POSITION ARE AS FOLLOWS:  These are considered to be enhancing.

·         Previous supervisory experience with administrative, managerial and clinical responsibilities for a Service treating acute and respite care inpatients and outpatients in a variety of PMR specialities

·         experience in system redesign, process improvement and clinical performance measures 

 

 


Degree of doctor medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. [The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: a. Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Associate of American Medical colleges for the year in which the degree was granted. b. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. c. Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.].
